How Long Does Credit Repair Actually Take? Here Is the Honest Answer
One of the first questions every new client asks us is: how long is this going to take? It is a fair question. If you are trying to buy a home in six months, you need to know whether that is realistic.
The honest answer is: it depends on what is on your report. But we can give you real benchmarks.
The Dispute Timeline
Once a dispute is filed with a credit bureau, the bureau has 30 days to investigate and respond (or 45 days if you provide additional information during the investigation period). In practice, most disputes are resolved within 30 to 45 days.
If the disputed item cannot be verified, it must be removed. If it is verified, you have options for escalation, including sending a method of verification request and involving the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau if needed.
What to Expect by Item Type
•Collections and charge offs: Many can be removed within 30 to 90 days through disputes, especially if the debt is old, has changed hands multiple times, or has reporting errors.
•Late payments: These are harder to remove unless they are inaccurate. Goodwill deletion requests to original creditors can work, but they take time and are not guaranteed.
•Medical collections: Since 2023, medical collections under 500 dollars are no longer factored into most FICO scores. Larger medical collections can often be disputed or negotiated.
•Bankruptcies: Chapter 7 stays on your report for 10 years, Chapter 13 for 7 years. There are very limited grounds to dispute a bankruptcy.
•Judgments and tax liens: These can sometimes be negotiated or disputed depending on the specifics.
Average Timeline We See with Clients
For clients with primarily collections and reporting errors, we typically see meaningful score gains, 40 to 100 plus points, within 90 days. For clients with more complex profiles including multiple late payments, charge offs, or public records, the process is usually 4 to 6 months for substantial improvement.
Our homebuyer clients who come to us with a specific closing date in mind often see the fastest results because we can prioritize the exact items their lender needs addressed.
What Speeds Things Up
•Coming in with a clear goal (mortgage by X date, auto loan by X date) so we can prioritize strategically.
•Having supporting documentation for disputes (old statements, settlement letters, medical EOBs) ready to go.
•Making on time payments consistently throughout the process, which builds positive history in parallel.
•Keeping credit card balances low so utilization is not working against your score gains from disputes.
The Bottom Line
Credit repair is not instant, but it is faster than most people expect when it is done correctly. The worst thing you can do is wait. Every month you wait is another month without progress.
