Credit Repair vs Credit Counseling: What Is Actually the Difference?
Credit Repair vs Credit Counseling: What Is Actually the Difference?
If you have been searching for ways to improve your credit, you have probably come across both credit repair and credit counseling. They sound similar, and some companies blur the lines on purpose, but they are fundamentally different services that solve different problems.
Here is exactly what each one does, and how to know which one you need.
What Is Credit Repair?
Credit repair focuses on your credit report, specifically on identifying and removing inaccurate, outdated, or unverifiable negative items. This includes collections, charge offs, late payments reported in error, accounts that are not yours, and items that are past the legal reporting period (generally 7 years for most negative items, 10 years for bankruptcies).
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, every consumer has the right to dispute inaccurate information on their credit report. Credit repair companies work on your behalf to exercise those rights through the dispute process, drafting letters, following up with bureaus, and escalating when needed.
Credit repair does not eliminate legitimate debt. It works to ensure that what is on your report is accurate and legally reportable.
What Is Credit Counseling?
Credit counseling is focused on debt management rather than credit reporting. A nonprofit credit counseling agency will review your income, expenses, and debts, and help you create a budget or a debt management plan (DMP).
Under a DMP, you make one monthly payment to the counseling agency, which then distributes it to your creditors, sometimes at a reduced interest rate negotiated on your behalf. Credit counseling does not dispute items on your report. It helps you pay down debt more manageably.
Which One Do You Need?
The answer depends on why your credit score is low.
You likely need credit repair if:
•You have collections, charge offs, or other negative items on your report, especially ones that may be inaccurate or old.
•Your score is low but you are managing your current bills fine.
•You are preparing for a mortgage or major loan and need your score to reflect your actual creditworthiness.
You likely need credit counseling if:
•You are overwhelmed by the amount of debt you owe and are struggling to make minimum payments.
•You want help negotiating with creditors to reduce interest rates.
•You need budgeting support and a structured repayment plan.
Some clients need both. A person carrying significant debt and dealing with inaccurate reporting on their report might benefit from credit counseling to manage the debt and credit repair to clean up what is on the report in parallel.
